Message from the President Minimize

Welcome!

When I reflect on the SVC experience, one phrase comes to mind: Education happens in many places and spaces of which the classroom is but one. This phrase reflects how we view our mission and how we view our students and their relationship to the larger community. We recognize and appreciate the many ways that learning can occur.

Our goal is to educate the leaders of tomorrow – in a wide range of fields – through a blend of theory and practice. We want our students and graduates to be successful in their present and future careers – to be ready for a lifetime of learning. We want to be the place where each student’s career is launched.

SVC students learn in the classroom from wonderful and accessible faculty. Real world experiences are integrated into the academic experience. An example of this is our first year course called Quest for Success where students engage in a project-based learning initiative within the community. During the semester and in the summers, upper-level students participate in a wide range of off-campus internships and practica under faculty guidance. Athletics, on-campus lectures, community service, student clubs, the student newspaper and the local radio station all provide other ways for students to engage with each other, with us and with the larger community.

Students’ home base is our historic campus located in Bennington, Vermont, which sits on 371 gorgeous acres, overlooking a stunning range of mountains. Whether your interest is outdoor activities (snowboarding, skiing or hiking) or the arts (seven museums are within easy reach), we can help you become connected. We are also within easy driving distance of major cities so you can enjoy the rural community and readily visit more urban settings.

I hope you visit our campus and see the many wonderful ways in which we foster learning. Attend a class. Sit in on a campus wide lecture. Drop by an athletic event. Visit our Office of Student Life. Enjoy the mountain views. Most importantly, take the time to meet and talk with members of our community – students, faculty and staff. You will enjoy getting to know them, and we look forward to getting to know you.
